About The Artwork

This small painting belongs to a series called HP (Happy Paintings). These usually small works start life as depositories of left over paints after a studio session. Colours and layers built up using either brush or a palette. Sometimes the backgrounds in this series can be quite abstract, unintended and very different to what Fernandez bigger formats. After a while, as the layers built up, she is left with very tactile textures, over which she places/paints a or several motives from ongoing works, or draws inspiration from photographs from her personal archive. The custom made frame is found plywood, cut by the artist using a router. Fernandez intends thus give a painting a certain sculptural qualities.

"I was was born in Caracas, Venezuela. My country is a surreal place that rides on top of giraffe. Just imagine the impossibility of controlling such anatomy. Yet the idea of riding a giraffe can be fascinating, even an exciting project. I must admit such prospect has its charms. Nowadays Venezuela is under the control of a NARCO REGIME, and such event is not recent . This has been on the making for the last 18 years. This regime has dangerous and proven links not only with the global dealing of narcotics but also with global terrorism. Could one make poetry out of the horror of witnessing (through the eyes of friends and relatives via social media) the daily destruction of the place I used to called home? When looking back at my most recent work, i.e. Deck Chairs Series, ATC drawings in charcoal and pencil, Midnight and Intimate nature Drawings, sometimes I think that a certain melancholy is driving me, that by standing before the impossibility of ever coming back to my country I intend to register the otherworldliness that inhabits my imagination. As an artist I am very methodological, rational in my approach to subject-matter and technique. I am quite organised, almost zen-like in the sense that I tend to work even formats to a certain degree of exhaustion, knowing that such approach of hard work and persistence - at least at this time in my life - could lead to a revelation of sorts . Yet I also know that distilled emotion seeps through. My work does transmit that undefined sense of something that lurks beneath that can be quite moving". Fernandez studied Fine Art in the Armando Reveron University Institute (now named UNEARTE), and Social Sciencies, Media and Drama in Universidad Catolica Andres Bello, both in Caracas. Fernandez established her practice in London in 2003. Most recently Fernandez showed her work at Maddox Arts in Mayfair as part of the group show HER NATURE (June September 2017). The artist had a solo exhibition in the Museo Alejandro Otero, Caracas, Venezuela (2013-14), titled TROPICO CAMUFLADO. She shows her work constantly in London, as well as in France, Belgium and Spain. Her work is in several private collections in Venezuela, Taiwan, Spain, USA, UK, France, Germany and Belgium.
